CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Boston University women's track and field team swept the America East women's weekly awards, as senior Allison Barwise and graduate student Katie Matthews were named Field Performer of the Week and Track Performer of the Week, respectively, the conference office announced on Tuesday.
A two-time pentathlon champion at the America East Indoor Championships, Barwise won in her season debut over the weekend at the Harvard Multi Meet. The senior scored 3835 points and finished 288 points ahead of the second-place finisher. As a part of her pentathlon win, Barwise took first in the 60m hurdles and the high jump. Barwise’s score ranks as the fourth-best in the country and tops in the conference.
Matthews set the NCAA pace in the 3,000m run with her time of 9:14.71 at the Multi-Team Meet on Jan. 17 at the Track and Tennis Center. She finished nearly 52 seconds faster than the second-place competitor and is four seconds clear of the next fastest harrier so far this year. The Rocky Hill, Conn., native is a two-time All-American.
The women's team will be back in action at the Track and Tennis Center on Jan. 25 when BU hosts the Terrier Invitational.
