FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Graduate student Katie Matthews of the Boston University women's track and field team broke her own school record in the 5,000m run at the NCAA Championships on Friday night at the University of Arkansas.
Matthews finished fifth with a time of 15:42.27, which is nearly four seconds faster than her previous record of 15:46.13, set earlier this year at the Terrier Invitational.
This is her highest finish at the NCAA Championships in any event and it topped her sixth-place performance (16:13.21) in the 5,000m run at the 2011 NCAA Championships. This is also the third time this season that she has broken a school record, as she also set a new school record in the 3,000m run at the Husky Classic (9:05.73).
Senior Allison Barwise was also in action on Friday as she competed in the national high jump final. She achieved a height of 1.73m; her top mark of the season was 1.84m.
Matthews completed her strong weekend with an 11th-place finish in the 3,000m run on Saturday (9:17.71).
