CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Boston University sophomore Leonie-Charlotte Athanasiadis has been named the America East Women's Tennis Scholar-Athlete of the Year, the league office announced Thursday afternoon.

A native of Haltern am See, Germany, Athanasiadis picked up First Team All-Conference honors in doubles play and a second-team nod in singles for the 2012 season. Ranked as high as No. 67 during the season by the ITA, she and junior Jessi Linero went 14-10 in doubles, including an impressive 8-5 victory over Yale's No. 22-ranked pair of Vicky Brook and Hanna Yu.

Named the America East Player of the Week on two occasions, Athanasiadis also compiled a singles record of 12-12, which included wins over opponents from No. 41 Brown, No. 69 Harvard and No. 74 College of Charleston. Placed on the women's tennis All-Academic team, Athanasiadis is studying psychology and owns a 3.36 cumulative GPA.

Her Scholar-Athlete of the Year award marks the fourth overall for the program and first since Aimee Charest was selected in 2005.

Each America East Scholar-Athlete is a starter or prominent reserve, carries a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.30. A committee of athletic administrators and NCAA Faculty Athletics Representatives chooses a Scholar-Athlete in each of the league's 20 championship sports. Of those 20 sport Scholar-Athletes, America East recognizes an annual Male and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
