Defending Champion UCLA Eliminates BU with 4-0 NCAA First Round Victory
May 9, 2009
LOS ANGELES - The 11th-seeded and defending national champion UCLA Bruins eliminated the Boston University women's tennis team with a hard-fought 4-0 win to advance to the second round of the NCAA tournament Saturday afternoon at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. The 2009 America East champion Terriers end their season with a 15-6 record after making their 11th consecutive trip to the NCAAs. The Bruins, who improve to 18-6, captured the doubles point by winning two matches while leading in a third and then followed with three singles victories for the 4-0 sweep. In singles action, Carling Seguson dropped only one game with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Yana Sadovskaya in the No. 6 match. 57th-ranked Andrea Remynse posted the same score over Francine Whu at No. 2, and Ashley Joelson earned the clinching point with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Elizabeth Corrao at No. 5. Freshman Stefanie Nunic was leading 15th-ranked Yasmin Schnack, 6-3, 2-5 when play was halted. Her first set win was the first for the Terriers at the NCAAs since Carrie Rose took one in 1999 against Pepperdine. In the other matches not completed, Cori Lefkowith trailed at No. 4 to Nina Pantic, 6-4, 5-2, and 114th-ranked Maya Johansson led Petra Santini, 6-3, 5-2 at No. 3. In doubles action, the 66th-ranked team of Wetmore and Seguso quickly dispatched Corrao and Santini with an 8-2 victory. Joelson/Pantic sealed the deal with an 8-4 win over Lefkowith and Danielle Abraham.
Whu and Nunic battled hard with the third-ranked team of Schnack and Remynse, having several break point opportunities to tie the score at 4-4. However, the talented Bruins duo held tough and took a 6-3 lead when the match was called because of UCLA already earning the doubles point with the two earlier wins. #11 UCLA - 4, #59 Boston University - 0 Singles Order of Finish: 6,2,5* Doubles Order of Finish: 2,3* *Clinching Point |
