Women Turn In Best Times But Lose To Connecticut, 162.5-125.5

BOSTON, MA-Sophomore Lidija Breznikar (Kotpje, Slovenia) led a group of six Terrier women swimmers who had their best times of the season but it was not enough as the host Terriers lost to a very strong, deep UConn team, 162.5-125.5, on Saturday, Nov. 15.

Breznikar continued her dominance in her three specialties by winning the 200 fly, the 200 breaststroke, and the 200 individual medley as she remained unbeaten in all three events this season. She led the way in the breaststroke with a 2:21.59, in the IM with a 2:10.10, and in the fly with a 2:07.74.

Her time in the latter was a personal-best this season, but she was not alone in establishing personal highs for the early season.

Sophomore Meagan Breiland (Mesa, AZ) won the 50 freestyle with a personal-best :25.16, while teammates Selina Herdman (Melville, NY), Kila Englebrook (Mechanicsburg, PA), Tanaz Irani (Orlando, FL), and Lauren Foster (Lake Quivira, KS) also had their best times in their events.

Herdman turned in a 10:52.83 in finishing second in the 1000. Englebrook was second in the 100 backstroke in 1:01.84. Irani was second in the 100 fly in 1:00.43, while Foster was second in the 200 freestyle in 1:56.98. Not only did Foster turn in her best time of the season in the 200, it was the best time in the event this year by a Terrier swimmer.

Foster, Herdman, Breiland and Marina Morie (Honolulu, HI) also combined efforts to win the 200 freestyle relay in 1:40.71.

Finally, Stacey Gallacher (Horseheads, NY) continued her winning ways in the diving as she captured the three-meter with 255.23 points. Kristin Stratton was second with 234.70 points.

Based on the Terriers' performances against UConn, the future bodes well for the Terriers as Gallacher and Stratton are the only seniors listed above. In the meantime, Foster is a junior, while Breznikar, Breiland, and Englebrook are sophomores, while Herdman, Irani, and Morie are freshmen.

"I was very pleased with how the women swam against Connecticut," said Terrier head coach Reagh Wetmore. "Many of them swam their best times of the year, and you can't ask for much more than that. UConn is a very strong and deep team and we saw that today."
