BOSTON – The Boston University swimming and diving teams opened their season against Binghamton Saturday afternoon, with the Terrier women winning 177-118, while the Terrier men suffered a 163-128 setback. “Things went about as we expected,” said BU head coach Bill Smyth, who made his Terrier debut Saturday. “Our women performed terrifically and I was very pleased.” The BU women were led by the solid performances of freshman Christina Ruggiero (Wilmington, Del.), who won both the 200-yard freestyle (1:56.82) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:13.85). Freshman Laura Pfendler (Clinton, N.Y.) cruised to victory in the 1000-yard freestyle (11:09.04) and junior Lidija Breznikar (Kotlje, Slovenia) dominated in the 200-yard butterfly, winning with a time of 2:08.95. The BU men were led by sophomore Greg Dierksen (Yucaipa, Calif.), who placed second in both the 1000-yard freestyle (10:08.65) and the 500-yard freestyle (4:51.76).
