2007 AE Swimming and Diving Championships to Take Place at BU's Aquatics Center
BOSTON – From Feb. 8-11 the Boston University swimming and diving program will host the 2007 America East swimming and diving championship at BU’s Competition Pool in the Fitness and Recreation Center. It is the second consecutive year the Terriers have held the conference championship in the Aquatics Center. Entering the conference championships, the women’s squad has put together a successful 2006-07 campaign, going 7-1 in dual-meet action and seeing an 18-year-old record fall in the first meet of the season. Sophomore Eve Kinsella broke a school record in the 200 free in the first meet of the year. She lowered that time two more times during the dual-meet season and the mark is currently set at one minute, 51.86 seconds. Kinsella swam that in the UNH-NU double dual-meet on Jan. 15. She has turned in strong performances all season including her 52.36 time in the 100 free, which she swam at the Terrier Invite on Nov. 17. That time has held as the second-best in the conference this season. Christina Ruggiero swam the fastest BU time in the 500 free at the Terrier Invite, clocking in at 5:07.07 and ranking as the third fastest time all season among America East swimmers in that event. The sophomore also ranks second in the 1650 free with a season-best time of 10:23.71. Ruggiero has proven to be a clutch performer for the Terriers and came through against Boston College, winning in the 500 free and swimming her best 100 split in the 400-free relay as the Terriers defeated BC for the first time since Jan. 25, 1995. The Terriers have also dominated the 200 IM this season as Kinsella, Lidija Breznikar and Brigette O’Shaughnessy own the second, third and fourth fastest time in America East. Kinsella’s time of 2:06.86 ranks second in the conference. Breznikar has also been a standout in the 400 IM, ranking as the second fastest swimmer in the conference, behind only UMBC’s Christina Cantwell. Ali Chester is the only BU freshman to rank in the top three in the conference on the women’s side, as she swam the 200 backstroke in 2:06.33, ranking second in the America East.
