Women's Swimming and Diving Defeats Syracuse; Men's Squad Falls to the Orange

BOSTON – The Boston University women’s swimming and diving program defeated Syracuse by a 126-117 margin, while the men’s side dropped a 141-91 decision on Saturday afternoon at BU’s competition pool. The Terriers won a combined 11 events in the contest. The women’s squad is now 7-1 in dual-meet action. Brigette O’Shaughnessy picked up the Terriers’ first win of the afternoon with a time of one minute, 52.92 seconds in the 200-yard freestyle race. In that race Christina Ruggiero and Liisa Young placed third and fourth place with times of 1:57.12 and 1:58.17, respectively. Ali Chester and Emily Munday grabbed points for the Terriers in the 50 free with second and third place finishes. Eve Kinsella and Marina Morie were first and third, respectively in the 200 IM. Kinsella won her second event of the day in the 100 free, finishing nearly two seconds ahead of the next finisher with a time of 52.41. Morie and Ruggiero grabbed 13 points for the Terriers in the 500 free with their first and second-place performances. Morie clocked in at 5:08.86, while Ruggiero finished in 5:08.90. Lidija Breznikar won the 200 breaststroke in 2:19.78 - her fastest dual-meet time. Heading into the final race the Terriers and Orange were tied. Ali Chester swam the opening leg of the winning 400-free relay, followed by O’Shaughnessy, Ruggerio and Kinsella, which won the dual-meet for BU. Ruggiero came up big with a season-high split, during her leg of the race. On the men’s side, Griffin Moodie swam one of his best dual meets at BU with three best unrested times, while Ben Kaiser, Arik Seiler and James Lands also turned in top performances. Arik Seiler won the 200 free with a personal-best 1:42.98 time, while Moodie was second in the 50 free, clocking in at 22.61. Brian Lawler continued to win in the one- and three-meter diving with 299.63 and 339.30 points. Moodie, Javier Fonseca and John Passaro swept the top three spots in the 200 breaststroke. Moodie completed the race in 2:12.51, followed by Fonseca in 2:19.79. Moodie's time exceeded his previous season high by three seconds. The Terriers host cross-town rival Boston College on Tuesday, Jan. 23 at 6:30 p.m.
