Breiland, Morie Help Lead Women To Second At Mowerson Meet
Fort Lauderdale, FL-Sophomore Meagan Breiland (Mesa, AZ) won the 50-meter freestyle and freshman Marina Morie (Honolulu, HI) won the 50-meter butterfly to help lead the Terrier women's swimming and diving team to a second-place finish at the Bob Mowerson Meet at the Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Complex on Jan. 5. Breiland won her event :28.68, while Morie bested the field with a time of :28.68. In addition to Breiland, the Terriers earned valuable points in the 50 free from sophomores Kila Englebrook (Mechanicsburg, PA) and Natalie Boyd (Pittsburgh, PA) who finished third and sixth in the event with times of :28.85 and :29.30, respectively. With Morie leading the way in the 50 fly, the Terriers claimed four of the top six positions as freshman Tanaz Irani (Orlando, FL), junior Emily Moreno (Oakland, NJ), and sophomore Hannah Mulry (Macungle, PA) took fourth, fifth, and sixth, respectively, with times of :31.97, :32.41, and :32.49. Sophomore Lidija Breznikar (Kotpje, Slovenia), who went into the meet with an 18-0 dual-meet record during the first half of the Terriers' competitive season, swam the 400-meter freestyle for the first time this year and finished third with a time of 4:47.92. Junior Lauren Foster (Lake Quivira, KS) was just behind in 4:53.30, while freshman Selina Herdman (Melville, NY) ws sixth in 5:02.32. Junior Courtlandt McKinlay (Cheshire, CT) and senior Kelly Sweeting (Sarasota, FL) notched third-place finishes for the Terriers. McKinley swam he 50-meter breaststroke in :38.28, while Sweeting finished the 50-meter backstroke in :34.17. In the diving events, senior Kristin Stratton (Aurora, CO) finished third with 232.25 points, and freshman Megan White (Falmouth, ME) was fourth with 228.50 points. The competition featured three dives each on the one- and three-meter boards. As a team, the Terriers finished with 220 points, second only to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, which garnered 269 points. In all, 13 teams competed in the annual one-day meet.
