CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - After helping lead the Boston University softball team to six victories, senior shortstop Brittany Clendenny and sophomore pitcher Melanie Russell collected the top weekly Patriot League awards, the conference announced Tuesday afternoon.
Their contributions proved critical, as the Terriers (30-18) extended their win streak to 11 and pulled within a game of Lehigh for first place in the Patriot League by sweeping Lafayette over the weekend.
Named the Player of the Week for the third time in her career and first time since 2012, Clendenny was particularly impressive in the series against the Leopards, going 7-for-11 with three home runs, six RBIs and four runs scored. She hit a key home run in the sixth inning of game two to tie the score in a game BU went on to win 2-1 in nine innings. Clendenny finished the week at 10-for-21 with four home runs, nine RBIs and five runs scored. She leads the Patriot League with 46 RBIs for the season.
Collecting her second Pitcher of the Week award this season, Russell allowed just one run in each of her starts against Lafayette to pick up two wins. She gave up four hits with no walks and five strikeouts in a 10-1 six-inning win in the series opener on Saturday and then closed the set by allowing three hits and a walk with nine strikeouts in a 3-1 victory on Sunday. Russell also picked up a save against Harvard on Thursday as BU snapped the Crimson's 18-game win streak with a 2-1 victory. For the week, Russell worked 14 innings and allowed three runs on eight hits while tallying 14 strikeouts against one walk.
BU has four regular season games remaining and will next visit in-state rival UMass on Wednesday (April 30) at 5 p.m. The Terriers will then host Bucknell in a three-game series this weekend with action starting on Saturday (May 3) at 12 p.m.
