BOSTON – Senior Melanie Delgado’s three-run home run in the second inning proved to be the difference as the Boston University softball team defeated Maine, 3-2, on Friday at the BU Softball Field.

With the win, the Terriers (38-14) advanced to the winners’ bracket of the America East tournament and will face the winner of Friday’s second game between Stony Brook and Albany. First pitch on Saturday is slated for 11 a.m.

Sophomore Holli Floetker pitched a complete game to improve her record to 18-3. She allowed six hits and her only blemish on the scoreboard was a two-run homer in the third inning. Sophomore Jayme Mask led the Terriers’ offense as she went 3-for-4 at the plate. Delgado went 2-for-3 to complete her productive day at the plate, while six other BU players reached base.

The Terriers’ big second inning was thanks to a couple of key hits with two outs. Senior Emily Roesch stood on first with two down before sophomore Amy Ekart singled to advance Roesch to second. Delgado then came up and blasted a homer to left, her second of the season.

Floetker did well to protect the one-run lead after the third inning, as she held Maine without a hit for three consecutive innings. She pitched out of a jam in the seventh, as the Black Bears had runners on first and third with two outs before Floetker forced the final batter to line out to left field.

If BU wins its game on Saturday, then it will play in the America East title game on Sunday at 10 a.m. A loss in Saturday’s contest means the Terriers will play later that afternoon at 4 p.m., with the winner of that contest advancing to Sunday’s title tilt.
