BALTIMORE - The Boston University softball team used a trio of home runs to defeat UMBC, 6-4, Saturday afternoon in Baltimore, Md. The second game of Saturday’s doubleheader was postponed due to rain and the teams will now play a doubleheader tomorrow starting at 11 a.m.

BU (35-14, 13-3 America East) was led by home runs from sophomores Brittany Clendenny and Megan Volpano along with a two-run homer by junior Emily Roesch. The Terriers had three players with multiple hits, as sophomores Jayme Mask, Chelsea O’Connor and Volpano posted two hits each. Roesch led the team with two RBIs, while Volpano, Clendenny and freshman Mandy Fernandez drove in the other runs.

Junior Whitney Tuthill improved to 13-5 on the season after pitching the first five innings for BU. Tuthill allowed three runs on six hits while striking out four batters before she was relieved by Holli Floetker. The sophomore pitched the final two innings, giving up just one run and striking out three batters to earn the save.

BU took an early lead after the top of the first inning after Mask led off with a single to the shortstop. Senior Erica Casacci advanced Mask to second on a sacrifice bunt. Clendenny got on base with a walk before O’Connor singled up the middle. O’Connor advanced to second base on a fielding error, which moved Clendenny to third and allowed Mask to score to give BU a 1-0 lead.


 

 

After a scoreless second inning, UMBC scored in the bottom of the third off an RBI single. Ashley Carver got on base with a hit to left field and advanced to second with a sacrifice bunt by Kayla Martinez. Jessica Warner then drove the ball up the middle, allowing Carver to round third and even the game at 1-1.

UMBC took the lead in the bottom of the next inning with a leadoff homer by Angela Yannone to put the Retrievers up 2-1 after four innings.

BU battled back with a four run top of the sixth. Clendenny scored the first one with a shot to right field for her eighth homer of the season. O’Connor then swung for a double and moved on to third base when Amy Ekart grounded out to the pitcher. Fernandez stepped up and drove in the run with a single before Roesch stepped up and drove the ball to right field for a two-run homer, giving the Terriers a 5-2 lead.

UMBC responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth. The Retrievers began with back-to-back singles before Floetker replaced Tuthill in the circle. Katie Ferguson stepped up and drove the ball down the left field line to drive in a run before Yannone walked to load the bases. KaelaMason hit into a double play before Caitlin Chance singled to right field to drive in the second run of the frame and bring the score to 5-4 in favor of the Terriers.

BU added to its lead in the top of the seventh with Volpano blasting the ball to left field for a two-out home run. UMBC could not create any offense in the bottom of the seventh, as BU claimed the 6-4 lead.

The Terriers and the Retrievers will conclude their three game series with a doubleheader tomorrow beginning at 11 a.m.
