ORONO, Maine - The Boston University softball team extended its winning streak to 10 straight games with a 5-3 victory over Maine in at Kessock Field on Tuesday afternoon. BU improved its record to 34-13 overall and 12-3 in the America East.
Sophomore Amy Ekart led the Terriers with a pair of hits while classmate Chelsea O’Connor hit her fifth home run of the season and drove in two runs. Sophomores Brittany Clendenny and Chelsea Kehr added RBI singles.
Sophomore Holli Floetker pitched the first 2.2 innings for the Terriers, allowing two runs and one hit. Junior Whitney Tuthill took over to pitch the final 4.1 innings and pick up her 12th victory of the season. Tuthill allowed seven hits but just one run to move her record to 12-4 in the circle.
Maine got on the scoreboard first with two runs in the bottom of the second inning. Hilary Kane led off with a walk before Dagmar Ralphs grounded into a double play to get two outs with no one on. Floetker put another Black Bear on base when she walked Jean Stevens before Margaret Hilton hit a two-run home run to put Maine up, 2-0, after two innings.
BU responded in the top of the third as Jayme Mask walked to begin the inning. Erica Casacci and Megan Volpano used back-to-back ground outs to move Mask to third before Clendenny singled up the middle to bring the run home.
The Terriers had a chance to even the game in the top of the fifth as they got the tying run to second base.
Melanie Delgado began with a single through the left side and
Kendra Meadows stepped in to run for the senior. Mask used a sacrifice bunt to get Meadows to second base but consecutive fly-outs to left field from Casacci and Volpano ended the inning without BU scoring a run.
BU managed to tie the game in the top of the sixth with O’Connor driving the ball out of the park in left center field. The Terriers then had the chance to take the lead, as Ekart and Emily Roesch got on base with back-to-back singles but Delgado struck out swinging to leave the game knotted at 2-2.
The Terriers uses a three-run seventh inning to claim the victory over the Black Bears. Mask walked for the second time then advanced to second with a sacrifice bunt from Casacci. Volpano walked to put two on base and Clendenny moved the runners to second and third with a ground out. Mask managed to score on a passed ball while Volpano advanced to third. Then, an error by the second baseman allowed O’Connor to get on base and then advance to second on the throw, while Volpano scored. Chelsea Kehr drove in the final run of the inning with an RBI single that brought O’Connor home and have BU a 5-2 lead.
Maine attempted a rally with two outs in the bottom of the seventh with three straight singles to load the bases. Another base hit from Kane drove in a run but Ralphs followed with a hit to left field that was handled by Casacci to end the game with BU claiming the 5-3 victory.
Next up for the Terriers is a trip to Amherst, Mass., on Wednesday, May 2, for a 5 p.m. game with Massachusetts.
