CLEARWATER, Fla. - After dropping a 7-1 decision to Oklahoma State, the Boston University softball team rebounded with an 8-0 run-rule victory over Florida A&M on Saturday evening at the Eddie C. Moore Complex. With the split on day two of the Clearwater Spring Invitational, the Terriers move to 7-13.
Extending their win streak to 10 games, the Cowgirls (17-12) scored four runs in the first inning against freshman Lauren Hynes (1-3) and added three more in the second to create a comfortable seven-run cushion. Kat Espinosa (9-6) pitched the first five innings and held BU to just two hits before Hynes hit an RBI double in the sixth against reliever Simone Freeman.
The Terriers' bats heated up in the second game with 15 hits against the Rattlers (7-23), highlighted by junior Amy Ekart's second home run of the season. Senior Whitney Tuthill (5-7) earned BU's first shutout of the year by holding Florida A&M to one hit while striking out nine Rattlers in six innings of work.
Recording a team-high four RBIs, Ekart opened with an RBI single up the middle in the third, bringing home junior Jayme Mask and freshman Haley King. She then hit a two-run blast to open the fifth inning with Mask scoring again.
Junior Brittany Clendenny and sophomore Mandy Fernandez added RBI singles in the fifth to extend the lead to six. One inning later, Clendenny put the game away by scoring junior Megan Volpano on a RBI double and reaching home plate on senior Emily Roesch's single through the left side.
BU will conclude the three-day invitational on Sunday (March 16) against Robert Morris at 11:45 a.m.
