BOSTON – After a last-minute victory over UMBC on Thursday, the Boston University women’s soccer team will look to continue its winning ways at Nickerson Field on Sunday (Oct. 7) against Stony Brook. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
Sunday’s game is Breast Cancer Awareness Day and all ticket revenue will be donated to cancer research foundations. There will also be a silent auction taking place at the game with all funds benefiting cancer research as well.
Entering the 14th all-time meeting between the America East rivals, BU (8-5-1, 4-0-0 AE) holds a commanding 10-2-1 lead in the series against Stony Brook. The Terriers have won three straight against the Seawolves, including a 2-0 shutout at Stony Brook last season. In that game, Jamie Turchi and former Terrier Lina Cords (’12) recorded their first goals of the 2011 season. Stony Brook’s last victory over BU came in the regular season of 2009 by a 2-1 margin. BU is riding a 28-game winning streak against conference foes entering Sunday’s game.
Freshman
Rachel Blauner led the Terriers to victory in their last game, as she scored with 18 seconds remaining in regulation at UMBC to give BU a 1-0 victory. The win extended BU’s winning streak to five straight games.
Leading the way this year for BU on offense is junior Madison Clemens. She is tied for third in goals (6) and fourth in points (12) in the America East. Sophomore Ana Cuffia and senior Brea Hewitt are second on the team, with three goals and an assist each for seven points. Sophomore Taylor Krebs is tied for second in the league with five assists.
BU has scored 23 goals as a team this season, while only surrendering 13 scores on defense. The Terriers have earned 89 corner kicks, compared to 53 for the opposition.
Defensively, BU has posted shutouts in two of its last five wins and has allowed just three goals during that stretch. Junior goalie Andrea Green ranks third in the American East in goals-against average (0.86), stopping 51 shots for a .810 save percentage.
Stony Brook arrives in Boston with a 7-4-2 (1-2-0 AE) record following a double overtime loss to Vermont Thursday night. Junior Larissa Nysch and senior Sa’sha Kershaw pace the Seawolves’ offense netting four goals apiece. Nysch also leads the team in points with 11 (4 goals, 3 assists), while Kershaw has recorded nine (4 goals, 1 assist). Stony Brook leads the conference in shots with 18.46 attempts per game. Freshman Tessa Devereaus, who is tied for second with Krebs in America East with assists, has handed out five this fall.
Through 13 games, junior Ashley Castanio has played every minute in net for the Seawolves. The goalie owns a 1.23 goals-against mark and has saved 67 shots for a .798 save percentage.
Head coach Sue Ryan is in her 28th season leading the Seawovles. She has guided Stony Brook to nine postseason appearances.
Next up for the Terriers is a trip to West Hartford, Conn., where they will take on the University of Hartford on Thursday (Oct. 11). First kick is slated for 7 p.m.
