Terriers Blank George Mason For First Win Of The Season

Box Score

Lauren Ciccone's second collegiate goal lifted the Terriers to their first win of the season.

FAIRFAX, VA-Junior Lauren Ciccone scored her first goal in nearly two years and senior Jessica Clinton posted her 16th career shutout to lift the Terrier women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over host George Mason in the opening game of the George Mason/Kappa Invitational on Friday evening, Sept. 12.

It marked the first win of the season for the Terriers, who are 1-2-1 overall. In the meantime, the Patriots suffered their first loss of the season as they are 3-1-1.

Ciccone picked a perfect time to score hersecond collegiate goal. Her first score came in a 4-0 win over the University of Albany on October 21, 2001.

Against George Mason, Ciccone took a pass from sophomore Melissa Shulman, then split two defenders, and sent a 15-yard shot past GMU goalkeeper Sarah Coughlin. The goal came at 72:57 and it was all Clinton would need for her shutout. She trails only Meghan Lynch, who holds the Terrier career shutout mark with 19.9 from 1996 through the 1999 season.

After an even first half in which both teams had four shots and neither club could score, the Terriers began to take charge in the second half. In the final 45 minutes of play, the Terriers outshot the Patriots, 9-4, and had the edge in corner kicks, 4-2.

It appeared as if the game might go into overtime, which would have marked the third straight game that the Terriers would need extra time to settle the outcome. But, Ciccone, with an assist to Shulman, decided the game in regulation.

The Terriers will return to action on Sunday when they take on the University of Delaware in the second game of the Classic. In Friday afternoon's other first-round matchup, Delaware lost to North Carolina State, 3-1. The victory improved the Wolfpacks' record to 4-1-0, while the Blue Hens slipped to 2-2-1.
