BOSTON - In thrilling fashion, the Boston University women's soccer team earned a 2-1 come-from-behind victory versus Stony Brook on Sunday afternoon in the America East Women's Soccer Championship semifinal game at Nickerson Field. Senior Emily Pallotta provided the heroics on Sunday afternoon as she assisted on freshman Jessica Morrow's goal late in the second half then headed home the game winner in overtime.
BU will now host the America East title game on Saturday (Nov. 7) at 1 pm versus Binghamton. Pallotta, the AE Midfielder of the Year, netted three points on Sunday, which now puts her eighth on BU's all-time scoring list with 48 career points.
The Terriers outshot Stony Brook, 26-5, and forced Marisa Viola to make 10 saves, while holding a commanding 15-0 advantage in corner kicks. Sophomore Jessica Luscinski led the way with seven shots and five on target. Senior netminder Janie Reilly, the AE Goalkeeper of the Year, made two saves to earn the victory.
By the seventh minute, the Terriers' offense picked up as they peppered Marisa Viola with a handful of quick shots, including a rocket from Luscinski from 18 yards out that Viola was forced to make a diving stop to her left.
Despite BU's dominance on possession, Stony Brook struck first in the 15th minute on its first shot attempt, as Dana Adamkiewicz crossed it into Sa'sha Kershaw, who one-timed it into the far right side from nine-yards out.
In the 40th minute, freshman Megan McGoldrick nearly scored as senior Farrell McClernon dished it off to her and she one-timed it with her left foot for the far right side. Her attempt, however, skimmed wide and proved to be the last scoring opportunity of the half.
In the second half, BU came out strong, maintaining possession and controlling the run of play. After 72 minutes without a goal, the Terriers' pressure paid off as Morrow one-timed the game-tying goal off a header pass from Pallotta. It was the third goal of the season for the rookie.
Following the goal, the momentum stayed with the Terriers and Luscinski had the best opportunity over the next 10 minutes as she collected a wide shot from McClernon and fired off a point-blank shot at Viola, who came up with the save and forced overtime.
In the overtime period, BU controlled the ball for the majority of the extra stanza and it paid off as Pallotta headed home her eighth goal of the season to send the Terriers into the America East title game.
BU will host the Bearcats on Saturday at 1 pm at Nickerson Field.
