Box Score | Video: E. Clark discusses game-winning goal
WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - Junior Emma Clark scored the game-winning goal in the 74th minute to propel the Boston University women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Hartford Thursday night at Alumni Stadium. With the victory, BU moves into sole possession of first place in the America East with a perfect 6-0-0 record in conference play while improving to 10-5-1 overall.
Thursday's victory marks the 30th consecutive league win for the Terriers who shutout the Hawks for the fifth straight meeting between the conference foes. The Terriers extend their winning streak to seven games while ending the Hawks' eight-game unbeaten streak. With the loss, Hartford moves to 9-3-3 on the season and 5-1-0 in league play.
Clark broke the scoreless affair in the 74th minute after senior Jessica Morrow sent a corner kick into the box. Clark got a piece of the ball after it deflected off a Hartford defender and sent a shot into the net from 15 yards out on the right side for her fourth goal of the season and to give the Terriers a 1-0 lead.
Junior goalkeeper Andrea Green improved to 9-5-1 on the season with her sixth shutout of the year. Green concluded the game with two saves.
The match was a hard-fought battle dominated by defense in the first half with a total of just four shots in the opening period, with only one on target. Momentum swung in BU's favor in the second half, with the Terriers totaling eight shots after the half compared to Hartford's three.
BU had a pair of shots on target in the remaining 15 minutes after Clark scored with senior Brea Hewitt and junior Megan McGoldrick forcing Hawks' keeper Erin Quinlan to make saves. Hartford's only attempt to tie the game in the final minutes came via a shot by Elise Galipo in the 86th minute but junior Green was there to make the save.
The Terriers remain on the road this weekend and head to Vestal, N.Y. to face Binghamton on Sunday (Oct. 14). First kick is scheduled for 1 p.m.
