BOSTON – The Boston University women’s soccer team extended its winning streak to six consecutive games with a 3-2 victory over Stony Brook Sunday afternoon at Nickerson Field. Three different players recorded goals for BU as the Terriers improve to 9-5-1 (5-0-0 America East) while Stony Brook moves to 7-5-2 (1-3-0 AE) on the season.

The win extends BU’s America East winning streak to 29 straight conference matches while the Terriers also improve to 11-3-1 in the all-time series with the Seawolves.

BU applied pressure to the Stony Brook defense early in the game and scored its first goal of the afternoon in the 31st minute. Sophomore Jamie Turchi sent a through ball down the middle of the field where junior Madison Clemens chased it down and corralled it from a pair of Stony Brook defenders. Clemens streaked past the Seawolves and into the center of the box where she fired the ball to the back of the net to give BU a 1-0 lead and record her team-leading seventh goal of the season.

Less than five minutes later, the Terriers added to their lead by taking advantage of a Seawolves’ miscue. Stony Brook was whistled for a foul in midfield in front of its own net and the Terriers were awarded a free kick. Senior Jessica Morrow took the kick for BU from the left side and sent it to the right of the net where junior Emma Clark was able to get a piece of the ball with a header shot that went past Stony Brook Keeper Ashley Castanio to give BU a 2-0 lead in the 36th minute.

Stony Brook cut into the deficit a mere 14 seconds later when Taryn Schoenbeck shot the ball past BU keeper Andrea Green following a pass from Queli Ornelas. It was the last goal of the half as BU went into the break with a 2-1 lead.

Sophomore Taylor Krebs notched her first goal of the season in the 75th minute with an unassisted tally from 15 yards out. Krebs rifled her shot to the bottom left corner of the net and Castanio was unable to get a hand on it as BU took a 3-2 advantage.

With less than 10 minutes remaining in regulation, Stony Brook made it a one-goal game with a score off a corner kick. Stella Norman lined up for the corner on the near side and arced the ball into the net. Green managed to get a piece of the ball in attempt to stop it but the ball went above her head and to the back of the net to make it a 3-2 game in the 84th minute.

In attempt to send the game to overtime, the Seawolves kept the ball in BU’s end of the field for the remainder of the game. Stony Brook was awarded one last corner with 14 seconds remaining but the BU defense played the kick well and did not allow the Seawolves a shot before the game ended with BU on top, 3-2.

The Terriers ended the game with a 17-7 advantage in shots with 10 balls on target. The Seawolves fired four shots at Green who ended the game with two saves. Stony Brook held a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Clemens and Krebs led the team with three shots each while both found the back of the net.

The Terriers begin a three-game road swing on Thursday (Oct. 11) when they travel to West Hartford, Conn., to face the Hartford Hawks. The game is set to begin at 7 p.m.
