BALTIMORE, Md. - Freshman Rachel Blauner scored her first career goal with 18 seconds remaining in regulation to lift the Boston University women's soccer team past UMBC, 1-0, Thursday night at Retriever Soccer Park.
The victory extends BU's winning streak to five straight games and improves the Terriers' record to 8-5-1 (4-0-0 in the America East) while UMBC drops to 1-9-3 (0-3-1 AE). The Terriers also remain undefeated all-time against the Retrievers, moving to 10-0-0 in the series that dates back to 2003. BU has now won its last 28 consecutive conference matches.
Blauner's first goal in a Terriers' uniform broke the scoreless affair in the last minute of regulation to give BU the win. The freshman recorded four shots on the night with her last finding the back of the net. Sophomore Taylor Krebs fielded a pass from the right side in the center of the box before turning and sending the ball to the opposite side of the field, where Blauner was wide open. Blauner rifled the ball to the left of the net to beat UMBC's keeper, Jen Nance, and deliver the Terriers a 1-0 victory.
Although they only scored one goal, the Terriers dominated the Retrievers with a 28-4 shot advantage. BU put 11 shots on target while UMBC placed two shots on goal.
Junior goalkeeper Andrea Green earned her fifth shutout of the season as she finished the game with two saves.
Junior Madison Clemens and Krebs led the team with five shots each while Krebs forced Nance to make four saves. Juniors Kylie Strom and Megan McGoldrick also challenged UMBC's keeper with two shots on goal apiece.
The Terriers return home on Sunday (Oct. 7) to host Stony Brook at 1 p.m.
