SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Boston University women’s soccer team was edged by Santa Clara, 1-0, Sunday afternoon at Buck Shaw Stadium in the Terriers’ final game of the Stanford Nike Invitational. The loss drops BU to 3-4-1 on the season while Santa Clara improved to 2-2-2.
The Broncos scored the lone goal of the game in the 47th minute with an unassisted tally from Sofia Huerta. Santa Clara took advantage of a misplayed ball by the BU defense and Huerta beat junior goalkeeper Andrea Green for the game-winning goal.
Green finished the game with five saves while the Terriers managed just two shots on goal. Overall, Santa Clara outshot BU, 17-9.
The Terriers had some momentum early in the game as junior Kylie Strom took a corner kick for BU a minute into the contest. Classmate Madison Clemens fired the first shot of the match in the fourth minute but it sailed wide before the teams engaged in a defensive battle. Sophomore Taylor Krebs took BU’s only other shot of the half in the 14th minute of the game but misfired.
Green was only challenged once in the first half on a shot by Alyssa Kleiner from inside the goalie box but the junior came up with the stop.
The Terriers had more scoring opportunities in the second half, as they totaled seven shots with four on target. After the Broncos’ goal early in the period, junior Erin Mullen tested the Santa Clara keeper but could not find the back of the net. Classmate Megan McGoldrick also had a chance on a breakaway opportunity but the Broncos’ goalie stood tall and made the save.
Despite Santa Clara holding a 10-4 advantage in corner kicks, BU was awarded two corners late in the game but the Terriers could not get a shot off and the Broncos claimed the 1-0 victory.
BU returns to Nickerson Field on Friday (Sept. 14) when the Terriers welcome Massachusetts to Boston. First kick is schedule for 7 p.m.
