STANFORD, Calif. - The Boston University women's soccer team held the defending NCAA champion scoreless through 88 minutes of action but No. 5 Stanford recorded a goal with 1:18 remaining in regulation to defeat BU, 1-0, Friday night in Laird Q. Cagan Stadium.

With the loss in their first game of the Stanford Nike Invitational, the Terriers drop to 3-3-1 on the season while the Cardinal improves to 3-1-1.

Despite being outshot 26-6 by Stanford and not recording a shot on goal, BU kept the 2011 national champion off the scoreboard until the final minutes of the match. Junior goalkeeper Andrea Green finished the game with eight saves, just one shy of her career high (nine vs. then-No. 10 Boston College).

Green was tested early in the game by the Cardinal, as she made a pair of saves in the first 10 minutes of the contest. She finished the first half with five saves while the Terriers offense mustered just one shot in the opening 45 minutes, with junior Madison Clemens having her attempt blocked in the 33rd minute.

Stanford's offense continued to dictate the game in the second half with the Cardinal recording 15 shots in the period. The Terriers took five shots in the half but none were on target as they left Stanford goalie Aly Gleason untested throughout the match.

Despite its offensive struggles, the BU defense and Green had an impressive showing. With the match still scoreless in the 85th minute, Green made a diving save to the left to stop a shot by Stanford's Haley Rosen.

Just over four minutes later Stanford's Alina Garciamendez moved up from central defense to assist on the attack. Garciamendez received a short pass about 30 yards out and took a couple of dribbles forward before she fired a 20-yard shot that skipped inside the right post and past Green to give Stanford the 1-0 victory.

BU concludes play in the Stanford Nike Invitational on Sunday (Sept. 9) at Santa Clara. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m. (ET).
