BOSTON - The No. 19 Boston University women’s soccer team lost, 3-1, to 10th-ranked Boston College Sunday night at Nickerson Field. The Terriers scored the first goal of the contest but the Eagles responded with three unanswered tallies to claim the victory.
After the 18th installment in the Green Line rivalry, BU drops to 2-2-0 on the season while BC improves to 3-0-0.
Junior Madison Clemens got the Terriers on the board early when she scored a goal in the fifth minute of the contest. Clemens received the ball via a cross from the left side from sophomore Taylor Krebs. The junior then drilled the ball with her left foot to the left corner of the goal to give BU a 1-0 lead.
The Eagles tied the game in the 28th minute when Stephanie McCaffery caught junior goalkeeper Andrea Green out of position as Green had come up in the box to defend a play. McCaffery lofted the ball into the net to even the game at 1-1.
The Eagles took a 2-1 lead in the 57th minute of the contest after a corner kick from Kristen Mewis. Kate McCarthy positioned herself in front of the goal and was able to knock the ball past Green.
McCaffery scored her second goal of the contest in the 73rd minute when she won a battle for the ball coming down the left side. McCaffery dribbled across the box and then fired the ball to the top right corner to give the Eagles a 3-1 lead.
The BC defense clamped down on BU during the remaining minutes and did not allow the Terriers a shot on goal to secure the victory.
BC ended the game with a 17-10 advantage with shots and challenged Green with 12 shots on goal. The junior stopped a career-high nine shots.
The Terriers return to action on Friday, Aug. 31, when BU welcomes Monmouth to Nickerson Field for the sixth annual Terrier Tailgate. Game time is slated for 6 p.m.
