BOSTON - Behind a pair of goals from senior Brea Hewitt and another tally from sophomore Jamie Turchi, the No. 23 Boston University women's soccer team defeated Central Connecticut State, 3-0, Friday night at Nickerson Field. With the season-opening victory, the Terriers move to 1-0-0, while the Blue Devils drop to 0-1-0.
Making her first-ever start, junior Andrea Green played all 90 minutes in net for the Terriers and stopped all three shots that she faced to earn her first career shutout.
Hewitt posted the first multi-goal performance of her career, as she scored in each half of the contest. The senior first found the net in the 30th minute when she put herself in the right position to bury a rebound from junior Megan McGoldrick's corner kick.
The Terriers maintained their advantage throughout the first half and added to their lead in the 72nd minute when Turchi snuck a shot past Blue Devils keeper Nikola Deiter, who finished with nine saves. Sophomore Kai Miller dished the assist off a rebound from McGoldrick's corner and Turchi found the back of the net for her first goal of the season.
Hewitt added the third goal less than five minutes later when McGoldrick sent a cross from the left to set up Hewitt who again beat Deiter to give BU a 3-0 lead. The Terriers controlled the tempo for the majority of the game and outshot the Blue Devils, 29-4. BU also had a commanding 10-1 edge in corner kicks, which set up two of the Terriers' three goals.
The Blue Devils had their best opportunities early in the game but managed just one shot on goal after the half. Seven Terriers placed a shot on target, with Hewitt and junior Madison Clemens each leading the team with three shots on goal.
BU will finish the weekend in Brookline, Mass., as the Terriers travel to Parsons Field to take on Northeastern on Sunday night. First whistle is slated for 6 p.m.
