BOSTON - Rising juniors Jenelle Kohanchuk and Tara Watchorn, along with transfer Jenn Wakefield and incoming freshman Marie-Philip Poulin, of the Boston University women’s ice hockey team have been named to Canada’s National Women’s Under-22 Team.
The U22 squad will play in a three-game exhibition series against the United States from Aug. 18-21 in Toronto, Ont.
Kohanchuk, Watchorn and Wakefield were members of the gold medal-winning U22 squad at the 2010 MLP Cup in Germany last January, while Poulin is making her U22 team debut.
A Winnipeg, Man., native, Kohanchuk tied for second on the Terriers with 12 goals and five power-play goals in 2009-10. She was a member of the Hockey East All-Star Team in November and garnered a conference player of the week recognition after setting a program record with four goals in a 4-2 victory against Wayne State on Oct. 17.
As a sophomore, Watchorn ranked second among Hockey East defensemen in both assists (14) and points (17). The New Castle, Ont., native scored the game-winning goal in the Hockey East title game against Connecticut and was named to the all-tournament team. The blueliner was also named to the Hockey East All-Second Team and New England Division I All-Star Team.
Both newcomers to BU for the 2010-11 season, Poulin and Wakefield spent the 2009-10 season with Canada’s National Women’s Team. A Beauceville, Que., native, Poulin scored both goals in Canada’s 2-0 gold medal-winning victory against the U.S. at the Olympic Winter Games. Wakefield, who hails from Pickering, Ont., participated in Canada’s pre-Olympic schedule and was an alternate for the Olympic team.
At the series, the four Terriers will face off against teammate Kasey Boucher, who was named to the U.S. Women’s Under-22 Select Team in June.
