After winning the program's second Hockey East title in three seasons, the Boston University women's ice hockey team comes in at No. 4 in this year's Terrier Twelve.
The path to the conference championship and the Terriers' third straight NCAA tournament appearance was not without drama, as BU needed some last-second heroics and double overtime to defeat Providence and secure the Hockey East crown. Senior captain Jenn Wakefield scored with 7.3 seconds remaining in regulation to tie the game before she scored again just 2:15 into the second overtime period. Wakefield was named Hockey East Tournament MVP for her efforts, while junior defenseman Kathryn Miller and sophomore forward Marie-Philip Poulin joined Wakefield on the All-Tournament team.
The Terriers faced Cornell the following weekend in what turned out to be a historic NCAA quarterfinal contest. BU trailed, 7-4, with 10:48 remaining in regulation before the Terriers scored three straight goals to tie the game. In the third overtime, Cornell scored with 10 seconds to play to earn an 8-7 win. It was the longest game in program history and sophomore goaltender Kerrin Sperry made a career high 58 saves.
Wakefield etched her name into the history books during the 2011-12 season, as she became the first skater in Hockey East history to score 100 career goals when she reached that milestone at Boston College on Nov. 2. She also became the second Hockey East skater to record over 200 career points. She was also named a Hockey East First Team All-Star and a New England Division I All-Star after finishing the season with a team-best 29 goals and 57 points.
Senior defenseman Kasey Boucher had a career year en route to being named Best Defenseman in Hockey East and joining Wakefield as a Hockey East First Team All-Star and a New England Division I All-Star. Senior defenseman Tara Watchorn and junior forward Isabel Menard were Second Team All-Stars, while forward Kayla Tutino made the All-Rookie Team. In total, six skaters had at least 20 points and 10 Terriers notched at least 10 assists.
BU had its second straight 20-win season, finishing with 23 victories. The Terriers played their best hockey at the end of the season, as they won 12 of their final 14 games. They also finished the season ranked fifth in the nation; it was the program's second straight top-five finish.
