2008-09 Schedule | Season Tickets | 2009 Frozen Four
BOSTON - The Boston University women's ice hockey team and head coach Brian Durocher are excited to announce the program's 2008-09 schedule, which features contests against half of the eight squads that qualified for the 2008 NCAA tournament. The Terriers, who will play a 34-game regular-season slate, open the year on Friday, Oct. 3, at Union.
Three of the Terriers' non-conference opponents this season (Harvard, Mercyhurst, St. Lawrence) have all appeared in each of the last four NCAA tournaments and have combined for 15 NCAA berths in the last six years.
"For the second straight year, we've put together a challenging and highly competitive schedule," said Durocher, the 2007-08 New England and Hockey East Coach of the Year. "We're looking forward to taking on some very strong non-conference opponents in addition to our always-tough league schedule."
BU will open its home schedule with a two-game set against Mercyhurst on Oct. 10-11, while St. Lawrence will visit Walter Brown Arena on Oct. 19. The Terriers are matched up with Harvard in the first round of this year's Beanpot Tournament on Feb. 3 at Northeastern.
The Terriers, who tied for third in the 2007-08 Hockey East standings to qualify for the conference tournament for the first time ever, will open league play on Oct. 23 at home against three-time defending Hockey East champion New Hampshire. The Wildcats fell to eventual national champion Minnesota Duluth in last year's NCAA semifinals.
Before opening the regular season with road games against Union and Rensselaer on Oct. 3-4, the Terriers will take on Dawson College at home in an exhibition on Sept. 28.
In addition to Mercyhurst and St. Lawrence, BU will host one more non-league opponent, as Clarkson will make the trip to Boston for a game on Oct. 18. The remainder of the non-conference schedule includes road tilts at Princeton (Nov. 14), Quinnipiac (Nov. 15) and Yale (Nov. 25), in addition to a pair of games at Ohio State on Jan. 2-3 to kick off the second half of the season. After facing Harvard in the opening round of the Beanpot, the Terriers will face either BC or tournament host Northeastern the following week on Feb. 10.
Eleven of the Terriers' 21 Hockey East contests will take place at home, as New Hampshire, Northeastern, Providence and Vermont will make two appearances each at Walter Brown Arena. BU will play two road games against Boston College, Connecticut and Maine.
For the first time ever, the Hockey East tournament will include six teams on the women's side, as the top two squads will receive byes. First-round action will take place on the weekend of Feb. 28-March 1 before the semifinals and final are held on March 7-8.
This season's national champion will be crowned at Agganis Arena, as BU will serve as host for the 2009 Women's Frozen Four on March 20 and 22.
BU, which in 2007-08 posted a record of 15-17-3 in just its third varsity season, returns 13 of its top 14 scorers in addition to all three of its goaltenders.
