BOSTON - The Boston University women's ice hockey team will add a group of seven newcomers to its 2009-10 roster, head coach Brian Durocher announced today. The Terriers will welcome forwards Jill Cardella, Taylor Holze, Shannon Mahoney and Cristina Wiley, defensemen Britt Hergesheimer and Kathryn Miller and goaltender Alissa Fromkin, a talented group from across North America.

"Assistant coaches Katie Lachapelle and Allison Coomey did a great job in recruiting outstanding student-athletes for the Class of 2013," said Durocher. "The seven student-athletes have had distinguished hockey careers while maintaining the highest level of academic excellence. I am confident that they will be tremendous assets to our women's ice hockey program, Boston University and our community."

The Terriers picked up a pair of forwards from the North American Hockey Academy in Stowe, Vt., the same school that produced current Terrier defenseman Kasey Boucher. Cardella is a 5-6 left wing from Rochester, N.Y., while Holze is a 5-4 forward out of Lynbrook, N.Y., who can play right wing or center. Cardella and Holze have both participated in multiple USA Hockey National Festivals and helped NAHA capture its league championship this past winter.

Mahoney, a local product from Carlisle, is a 5-7 forward who was named a Boston Globe All-Scholastic in 2008 after her senior season at Concord-Carlisle High School. She was a three-time Dual County League scoring champion before prepping at the Berkshire School in Suffield.

Rounding out the group of forwards, Wiley is a 5-2 native of Vineyard Haven, where she was a Boston Globe All-Star at Martha's Vineyard High School. Last season, she played junior hockey for the Boston Shamrocks, tallying 10 goals and five assists in 39 games.

On defense, Hergesheimer is a 5-8 right-side defenseman who played for the Balmoral School in Winnipeg, Man., where she was teammates with the Terriers' All-Rookie forward Jenelle Kohanchuk. Hergesheimer, a native of East St. Paul, Man., was an assistant captain for her provincial team that won back-to-back bronze medals at the Canadian Under-18 tournament.

Miller is a two-year veteran of the Canadian Under-18 tournament, serving as assistant captain of Team Ontario. A 5-10 native of Milverton, Ont., Miller comes to BU from the Mississauga Chiefs, the program that produced Terrier goaltender Melissa Haber, and was on the Chiefs team that visited Walter Brown Arena for an exhibition game with BU in September 2007.

Fromkin joins the netminding corps from Phillips Academy in Andover, the school that also counts BU defenseman Melissa Tetreau among its alumni. A 5-7 native of Manhasset, N.Y., she earned NEPSAC first-team all-star honors.

The seven newcomers join a group of 15 players returning from last year's squad that went 18-11-7 to finish third in Hockey East and make its second straight appearance in the Women's Hockey East Tournament. Seniors Sarah Appleton and Melissa Tetreau will captain the squad in 2009-10.
