WAKEFIELD, Mass. - The Boston University women's ice hockey team swept the Hockey East monthly awards, as freshman Sarah Lefort, junior co-captain Marie-Philip Poulin and junior Kerrin Sperry were each honored, the league office announced on Friday.
Lefort was named Rookie of the Month, Poulin was picked as Player of the Month and Sperry was saluted as Goaltender of the Month thanks to a spectacular six-game stretch. BU went 5-1 in March, winning its second straight Hockey East title and advancing to the NCAA championship game for the second time in three years.
Poulin earned Player of the Month accolades after she led the Terriers with 10 points and was tied for the team lead with five assists during March. She was named to the Hockey East All-Tournament Team as well as the Frozen Four All-Tournament Team and scored a goal and an assist in each of the Terriers' three NCAA tournament tilts.
Sperry garnered Goaltender of the Month honors after she backstopped BU to its second Frozen Four appearance in the last three seasons. She started all six games and posted a 2.01 goals-against average and a .936 save percentage, including a 1.40 goals-against average and a .956 save percentage in the five victories. Sperry was named the Hockey East Tournament MVP after she allowed just two goals during the championship weekend, including a 42-save shutout against Providence in the semifinals.
Lefort reaped Rookie of the Month laurels after she concluded her freshman campaign on a high note. She scored five goals and added two assists for seven points, including two power play goals and a game-winning goal. Lefort scored twice in the Terriers' 5-3 win over Clarkson in the NCAA quarterfinals and also had a goal in the national title game. She joined Poulin as a plus-8 during March.
Both Lefort and Poulin earned their respective monthly awards in October as well. Poulin is currently representing Canada at the 2013 IIHF Ice Hockey Women's World Championship in Ottawa and scored a record four goals against Switzerland on April 3.
