WAKEFIELD, Mass. - Junior co-captain Marie-Philip Poulin and freshman Sarah Lefort of the No. 2 Boston University women's ice hockey team each earned a Hockey East weekly award, the league office announced on Monday.
Poulin was named Player of the Week after a fantastic showing at the Frozen Four this past weekend. She scored a goal and an assist to help lead BU past Mercyhurst, 4-1, on Friday before she had a goal and an assist on Sunday in the national title game against Minnesota. The Beauceville, Que., native was named to the All-Tournament Team and finished the season with 55 points (19g, 36a).
Lefort capped off a fantastic freshman season by being named Rookie of the Week. She finished as a plus-2 against Mercyhurst before lighting the lamp against Minnesota in the tile game. Her goal was especially timely, as it cut the Gophers' lead to 2-1 entering the second period. The Ormstown, Que., native tied Poulin's program record for goals by a freshman with 24 and finished the season with 43 points.
BU was also named Team of the Week after the Terriers advanced to the program's second national title game in the last three seasons. BU is the only Hockey East school to ever play in an NCAA championship game. The Terriers finished the season with a program-record 28 wins and won both the Hockey East regular-season and tournament title. They are back-to-back conference champions and have won three of the last four Hockey East tournaments.
