BOSTON - Junior Isabel Menard notched her 100th career point and sophomore Kerrin Sperry made 30 stops for her first shutout of the season to lead the Boston University women's hockey team to a 6-0 win over fourth-ranked Boston College on Wednesday night at Walter Brown Arena.
BU (13-12-1, 8-7-0 WHEA) dominated BC (18-7-2, 11-3-2 WHEA) throughout a majority of the contest in the Terriers' most thorough game of the season. Six different skaters lit the lamp, while four players each recorded multiple points.
Menard becomes the second Terrier to reach the century mark in a scoring category this season, as senior captain Jenn Wakefield notched her 100th career goal on Nov. 2, also against BC. The Ottawa, Ont., native now has 101 points (44g, 57a), 21 of which were tallied with the Terriers.
The teams played even through the first 19 minutes, but the Terriers broke through with just 11 seconds remaining in the first frame. Sophomore Louise Warren took a pass from classmate Kaleigh Fratkin and sped into the offensive zone. She sent a pass from the left wing toward Holze, who dashed between the circles to collect the feed and lift the puck over Corinne Boyles' (30 saves) glove and into the net. It was Holze's fourth goal of the season.
The second goal came at the 15:06 mark of the second stanza, and it came in a less than conventional fashion. The play began when Holze blocked a pass with her stick at the BC blue line. The puck bounced onto Caroline Campbell's stick, who threw the puck well over Boyles' cage. However, the puck bounced off the glass and then off of Boyles' skate, finally landing behind the goal line for Campbell's second strike of the season.
Sophomore Marie-Philip Poulin was next to make her way onto the score sheet, as she ripped a shot from the right circle that beat Boyles to make it 3-0 with 1:31 left in the middle session.
In the third period, the Terriers' special teams units were responsible for all three tallies. The first came at the 8:56 mark when senior Tara Watchorn blasted a shot from the point that found the back of the net. Menard was credited with her second assist of the night.
Louise Warren then made it a 5-0 game with 7:20 remaining in regulation. Holze was responsible for a nice feed that Warren deposited for her third goal of the season. Wakefield rounded out the scoring when she converted a shorthanded bid for her team-leading 16th goal of the season. The goal also extended her point streak to nine games.
With the victory, the Terriers claimed the regular season series with the Eagles, 2-1. BU now has three wins against ranked opponents, with all three victories coming against teams in the top-5 of this week's poll.
BU will look to continue its winning ways when the Terriers welcome No. 6 Northeastern to Agganis Arena on Saturday afternoon. It is a Skating Strides game, which means all proceeds from the contest will be donated to various breast cancer charities. Puck drop is scheduled for 3 p.m.
