B.U. Wraps Up America East Regular-Season Championship With 2-1 Win At UNH

DURHAM, N.H. - Boston University put the finishing touches on a perfect 6-0 America East regular-season record with a 2-1 victory at the University of New Hampshire on Saturday, Oct. 30. It was the Terriers' seventh regular-season title in the 16 years the conference has sponsored field hockey.

Senior Lauren Vendetti (Ashland, Mass.) and freshman Sarah Shute (Lincolnville, Maine) scored for the Terriers.

It was the final regular-season game for both teams. B.U. (12-6, 6-0 America East), the top seed in the tournament, will play fourth-seeded UNH in the semifinals of the America East Field Hockey Championship on Friday, Nov. 5 at the Terriers' Jack Barry Field in Cambridge, Mass.

UNH (4-15, 2-4) earns the final of four spots in the 2004 America East Field Hockey Championship thanks to a better point differential than the University at Albany (7-11, 2-4) and the University of Vermont (3-15, 2-4).

Northeastern University (15-3, 5-1) earned the No. 2 seed thanks to a 2-1 victory at the University of Maine (12-5, 4-2) on Saturday. Maine will be the No. 3 seed.

It was Shute's goal with 3:44 remaining in a 1-1 game that proved to be the decisive score. The freshman drove down the right side, past UNH goalkeeper Christine Buckley, and deposited the ball into the open cage. It was her second game-winning goal of the season.

UNH regained possession in the final minute and moved the ball into the circle twice, but the Wildcats were unable to record a shot or earn a penalty corner before time expired.

The Terriers jumped in front 1-0 when Vendetti scored on a penalty corner after controlling the rebound off the initial shot and tipped the ball past Buckley with 16:20 elapsed in the game.

UNH's Kaitlyn Skelley scored on a breakaway with just under 10 minutes remaining in the half to tie the score at 1-1.

B.U. next plays on Friday, Nov. 5 when they meet UNH for the second time in six days at 1:30 p.m. at Jack Barry Field. Northeastern and Maine play at 11 a.m.
