Field Hockey Drops One Spot To No. 17 In STX/NFHCA Poll

Boston, MA (Sept. 19) - The field hockey team is ranked No. 17 in this week's STX/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll released on Sept. 19. The University of Maryland retains the top spot with a 7-0 record and 24 first-place votes.

Sally Starr's team (4-2, 1-0 America East) completed a 2-1 week that saw them drop a 1-0 decision to No. 14 Boston College on Wednesday, before kicking off its' home schedule with a 2-0 win over Maine and a 2-1 win over California-Berkeley. Junior goalkeeper Susan Harrington (Tuftonboro, NH) captured America East Player of the Week honors for her efforts. She stopped seven shots in the loss to BC, allowing only a penalty stroke goal in the second half. She had two saves in the 2-0 shutout of Maine on Saturday, Sept. 16, and turned away four shots against Cal-Berkeley on Sept. 17. It was the first such honor for Harrington, who is second in the conference with a 1.33 goals against average.

Junior Forward Jane Rogers continues to lead the Terriers in scoring with 4-2-10 in six games. She had a goal in the Maine game and assisted on senior forward Kelly Clothier's (Philadelphia, PA) game-winning goal against Cal-Berkeley the next day. Rogers is currently tied with Alison Caito '87 for 18th on the Terriers all-time scoring list with 44 points. Senior forward Kate Cusick (Allentown, PA) remains tied with Sally Maxwell '90 for 13th overall with 52 points. Rogers is in second place in the America East, averaging 1.67 points per game. Senior midfielder Robyn Kenney (Whitehouse Station, NJ) is seventh in the conference, averaging 1.17 points per game.

After this weekend's wins, the Terriers are now 15-3 all-time versus Maine, and a perfect 5-0 against Cal-Berkeley. B.U. has now won 11 straight America East contests, including last year's tournament games.

Coach Starr was particularly impressed with the defensive play of freshman Lindsey Domers (Voorhees, NJ), as well as senior co-captain Kate Conover (Cheshire, CT) and junior Kerry Carney (Yorktown Heights, NY) this weekend.

The Terriers have outscored opponents 12-8 in 2000 and are outshooting foes, 92-67. Opponents do hold an advantage in penalty corners, however, 41-37.

B.U. completes its four-game homestand this weekend with a pair of America East contests. The Terriers will take on Towson at 7 p.m. on Sept. 22, and Delaware at 1 p.m. on Sept. 24 on Nickerson Field.
