BOSTON - Two of the last unbeaten squads in the nation will meet on Sunday (Sept. 9) at Jordan Field, as the No. 12 Boston University field hockey team (5-0) will aim for its first 6-0 start in program history when it takes on No. 2 Syracuse (4-0). Game time is set for 11 a.m.
BU is coming off a 2-1 win at No. 17 Boston College on Friday to match the 2010 squad's school record of five straight wins to open a season.
The Orange used a goal with under a minute left in regulation to pull off a 3-2 road victory over New Hampshire on Friday and remain undefeated. Syracuse began the year with wins over Monmouth, Ohio and North Carolina to move up the No. 2 spot in the national poll.
Senior Kelsey Millman leads the Orange in points (9) and assists (3) and is one of three players on the squad to score three goals this season, joining sophomore Lauren Brooks and freshman Gillian Pinder. Both of freshman Emma Russell's goals this year have been game-winners.
In goal, senior Leann Stiver has started all four contests and boasts a 0.74 goals-against average and an .800 save percentage.
The Orange have outscored their opponents 18-3 thus far this season and have recorded 85 shots while allowing only 33.
BU has also enjoyed a balanced scoring attack with senior Jacinda McLeod leading the way with four tallies and four others with two goals apiece. Senior Nicole van Oosterom scored her second game-winner of the year in Friday's triumph over the Eagles.
The Terrier defense has allowed just two goals over the last 284:50, as senior Jess Maroney and sophomore Valentina Cerda Eimbcke boast goals-against averages of 0.77 and 1.55, respectively, while splitting time in the cage.
BU and Syracuse met last year for the first time since the 1993 season and the Orange earned a 3-2 home win to take an 8-5 advantage in the all-time series.
