CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Boston University has been picked as the favorite to finish atop the 2012 America East field hockey standings, as announced by the conference office on Friday. The Terriers edged Albany by a single point in the preseason coaches' poll.

BU and Albany each earned three first-place votes with the Terriers earning 23 points to the Great Danes' 22. Maine was third with 16 points and defending league champion New Hampshire was fourth with 14. Fairfield (9) and Vermont (6) rounded out the six-team poll. Coaches are not permitted to vote for their own team in the poll.

The Terriers shared the 2011 regular-season crown with UNH and reached the conference title game, where they fell to the Wildcats to end their season with a record of 11-9.

BU returns eight starters and its top four scorers from last year's squad, which finished the year ranked 13th in the NFHCA national poll.

The Terriers will open their regular season on Friday, Aug. 24, when they visit Delaware for a 6 p.m. contest.
