Postgame Comments - Rachel Coll | Box Score
AMHERST, Mass. - Freshman Rachel Coll scored her first collegiate goal 51 seconds into double overtime to lift the No. 12 Boston University field hockey team to a thrilling 3-2 road victory over No. 25 Massachusetts on Tuesday afternoon at Garber Field.
The Terriers, who improved to 6-2 and stopped a two-game losing skid, overcame first-half deficits of 1-0 and 2-1 before winning in overtime for the fourth time this season.
BU's quartet of New Zealand natives were the story, as Coll and seniors Nicole van Oosterom and Jacinda McLeod each scored a goal while junior Ella Gunson assisted on all three tallies.
After a first overtime session in which the Terriers dominated but could not score, Gunson kicked off the second overtime by dribbling up the right side and then penetrated the circle before dishing off a centering pass to Coll for the winner.
The Terriers held a commanding 26-11 shot advantage and earned 13 corners while allowing just four. Senior Jess Maroney earned the win in goal, earning four saves after replacing sophomore Valentina Cerda Eimbcke, who recorded a pair of saves, at halftime.
UMass (3-5) got a goal from Alexa Sikalis in the first minute of the game, but van Oosterom potted an equalizer in the 18th minute with a blast off a corner. Gunson took the insert and then passed off to van Oosterom on the left side.
The Minutewomen regained the lead less than four minutes later when Nicole Cordero took a pass from Kate Heineman and converted from just above the right post.
BU earned back-to-back corners as time expired in the first half and capitalized on the latter, as McLeod drilled a shot off UMass goalkeeper Sam Carlino and in to cause a 2-2 deadlock heading into intermission. Gunson and junior
Kat Spring picked up assists on the tally.
The Terriers will return to action on Sunday (Sept. 23) when they play host to No. 7 Virginia for an 11 a.m. contest at Jordan Field.
