ALLSTON, Mass. - Senior Macey Gaumond scored twice and two Terrier goalkeepers combined to make nine saves as the No. 14 Boston University field hockey team defeated Kent State, 4-1, on Saturday night at Jordan Field.
Gaumond scored the final two goals of the contest, her first two of the season, to help improve the Terriers' record to a perfect 4-0. This was the first home game for BU and first win in regulation after three straight road overtime victories.
Senior Nicole van Oosterom and junior Madeleine Hackett also found the back of the cage for the Terriers, who matched their highest goal total of the year. Sophomore Valentina Cerda Eimbcke made four saves in the first half and did not allow a goal before she gave way to senior Jess Maroney, who made five saves in the second half and allowed just one goal.
BU struck first just 5:39 into the contest when van Oosterom dribbled past the defense and into the circle before she hammered a shot past Kent State (2-2) goalkeeper Jahna Jordan. It was the first goal of the season for van Oosterom.
Hackett, the hero of Friday night's overtime win at Providence, potted her second goal of the season at the 19:31 mark when she tallied an unassisted goal after dribbling past two defenders following a restart.
Gaumond made it a 3-0 game with just 2:33 remaining in the opening frame. Senior Kiley Allosso sent the ball into the circle and Gaumond was in perfect position to tip the shot home.
The Golden Flashes got a goal back only 3:55 into the second stanza when Rebecca Lee capitalized on a penalty corner. The Terriers responded well after that goal, however, and Gaumond regained their three-goal lead when she notched an unassisted goal with less than 10 minutes remaining.
The Terriers outshot the Golden Flashes, 24-16, and stopped Kent State from converting all but one of its 10 penalty corners.
BU will be back in action on Sept. 7 when the Terriers trek to Boston College. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
