Novice Boat Leads Terriers At Head of the Charles Regatta

The women's novice eight finished sixth in a field of 55 crews to highlight the Terriers' performance at the 39th Annual Head of the Charles Regatta, which concluded on Sunday, October 19th.

The two-day event, which is the largest rowing regatta in the world, attracted nearly 7,000 rowers representing over 300 rowing clubs, colleges, and universities from around the world. The course, which began at Boston University's DeWolfe Boathouse, churned its way along the Charles River for 6,000 meters. Normally, a course will cover 2,000 meters.

The novice boat did an excellent job in covering the course in 17:40 and was the third fastest collegiate boat. The only crews ahead of them were from the University of Virginia, which won the event in 17:07, and Radcliffe, which finished just ahead of the Terriers in fifth place in a time of 17:34.2.

B.U. had one other boat entered in the regatta, and that was the championship eight, which took 23rd in a field of 40 boats. The Terriers were clocked in 17:10.0 with the winning time of 15:31.1 turned in by the London Training Center.

It was not totally surprising to Terrier head coach Holly Hatton, as the Terriers are looking to replace a number of seniors who graduated last May. Obviously, with the performance of the novice boat, there are a number of good young rowers in the program.
