Women's Crew Finishes Second In NCAA Third-Level Finals

The Terrier women's varsity heavyweight crew closed out its season on Sunday, by finishing second in the third-level finals at the NCAA Rowing Championships held in Indianapolis, Ind.

One of 16 boats entered in the featured event, the Terriers covered the 2,000-meter course in 6:27.61 in their final race of the season, just ahead of Washington State University, which finished third in 6:27.74. Michigan State finished ahead of B.U. in a time of 6:22.99, while the Terriers and Cougars bested fourth-place Tennessee (6:32.44).

The Terriers opened their competition in a heat against Brown University, the University of California, the University of Washington, and Washington State. Brown, which went on to win the petite finals, won the opening heat in a time of 6:39.27. Cal was second in 6:42.06, just three-one-hundredths of a second ahead of Washington. Washington, which went on to finish fourth behind Harvard, Michigan, and Stanford in the grand finals, was timed in 6:42.09 in the opening heat. The Terriers finished approximately three lengths back in 6:52.07, while Washington State was fifth in 6:59.97.

Then, in the afternoon repechage, the Terriers finished sixth in their heat in a time of 7:17.34. Yale won the race in 7:09.43, with Ohio State finishing second in 7:11.46. Michigan State was a close third in 7:11.83. Next, in order, came Tennessee (7:15.10), Washington State (7:15.51), and the Terriers.

That set the stage for the Terriers' appearance in the third-level finals.
