Women's Rowing Places Fifth in Morning Heat, Will Row in Repechage at 1:00 p.m.
Regatta Notes WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – Although the Boston University women’s rowing team got off to a slow start and finished fifth in its morning heat at the 2006 NCAA Women’s Rowing Championship on Lake Mercer, the Terriers will have another chance to make Saturday’s semifinals today at 1:00 p.m. in the Repechage (moved up from 4:00 p.m. due to incoming weather). After getting left behind in the start, the BU crew had to battle to get back in the race. Toward the end of the first 1,000 meters, the Terriers were within six seats of third place behind first-place California, second-place Washington State and third-place UCLA. At that point, Tennessee made a push to take fourth place and BU could not recover, as the Terriers rowed home at a conservative rate, knowing that they would be racing in the afternoon’s Repechage. California took first in 6:36.7, Washington State was second in 6:38.5, UCLA was third in 6:39.2, Tennessee was fourth in 6:39.8 and BU was fifth in 6:48.8. “We weren’t really prepared for the start and got left at the line,” said BU Head Coach Holly Hatton. “When that happens, you have to pay such a price to get back in it. We did come back really strong, but when Tennessee made its move, coxswain Cyndney Nakama didn’t think we could challenge and decided to conserve. “They didn’t row the race they’re capable of – partially because they didn’t have the preparation they are used to because [three seat] Emily Brown was out of the boat last week for five days with an injury. I had a feeling we would have a tough first race, but I think we can really come back this afternoon.” The Repechage will feature the six crews that did not qualify for the semifinals by placing third or better in the morning heats. Currently, 10 teams have already earned a spot in the semis – the top three in each of the three heats (there was a two-way tie for third in the first heat, thus both teams qualified). The Terriers will row against Washington, Stanford, Notre Dame, Wisconsin and Tennessee for the trio of remaining slots in the semifinals. BU’s time from the heat was third best among the Repechage boats behind Tennessee (6:39.8) and Notre Dame (6:44.6), but ahead of Wisconsin (6:49.5), Washington (6:52.9) and Stanford (6:58.8).
