WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – The Boston University women’s rowing team came up with a fifth-place finish in the Friday afternoon Repechage of the 2006 NCAA Women’s Rowing Championship on Mercer Lake. The Terriers will now row in the Third Level Final on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. to contest places 14-16 with Tennessee and Wisconsin.
The exciting Repechage race featured six crews that rowed almost even through much of the first 1,000 meters. BU was right in the mix, contesting mainly with Washington, Notre Dame and Stanford for the top three slots and a berth in the semifinals. It was not until the third 500 that the Terriers were overcome by Tennessee to finish the race in 6:31.5, good for fifth place. Washington was first in 6:23.4, Notre Dame was second in 6:25.9, Stanford was third in 6:26.8, Tennessee was fourth in 6:27.6 and Wisconsin was last in 6:31.9.
The Repechage race was for the six teams that did not make it directly to the semifinals by placing in the top three of their morning heats. The first three finishers (Washington, Notre Dame, Stanford) will join the other 10 crews in Saturday's semifinals.
“I think we’re disappointed at not having made it to the semifinals,” said BU Head Coach Holly Hatton. “But, as a whole, they really raced their hearts out this afternoon. They had a tough one this morning – they were a little intimidated having never raced at this level – but I was impressed that they didn’t let it take them down.
“We could finish around 14th when we were out of the rankings for most of the season, and that shows a significant change from where we started,” continued Hatton. “Although we’re not as physically dominating as some of the other crews, we are able to row at this level because of skill and heart. It’s a great experience, especially for the five rowers who will return next year.”
The Terriers will vie for 14th through 16th place on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. to close out NCAA action.
