The women's varsity heavyweight rowing team closed out its 2002 spring regatta schedule on Sunday with wins over Northeastern and MIT and a loss to Radcliffe on the Charles River.

However, the shells are not being put away for the season as the Terriers travel to Camden, NJ next Sunday (May 12th) for the Eastern Sprints and then hopefully will receive a team bid for the NCAAs which will be held May 31-June 2 in Indianapolis, IN.

In Sunday's race, the Terriers got off to aslow start through the first 500 meters, and it proved to be a key as they lost to Radcliffe by just under six seconds, 6:43.3 to 6:49.2.

With the win, Radcliffe captured the DeWolfe-Allen Cup, which is named after Dick DeWolfe, chairman of Boston University's Board of Trustees, and Clint Allen, a former outstanding rower at Harvard and great friend of B.U. women's rowing.

The Terriers did come away with a Cup, though, as they won the Women's Council Cup, which is presented to the winner of the B.U.-Northeastern regatta.

Northeastern was timed in 6:55.9, while MIT finished in fourth with a time of 7:37.0.

"Radcliffe really got off a great start," said Terrier head coach Holly Hatton. "After that, we didn't give up much.

"In general, I thought we raced well," the coach continued. "I think we are gaining confidence going into the Sprints.

"I also thought it was very significant that we beat Northeastern," Hatton went on. "Coming into today's race, they were fourth in the region and we were fifth. Now, we should move ahead of them into fourth, and that should put us back in the picture for an NCAA bid."

What should also help the Terriers was their win in the varsity 4 "A" race in which they defeated both Radcliffe and Northeastern. B.U.'s winning time was 7:38.9, while Radcliffe was second in 7:42.2 and Northeastern was third in 7:53.0.

An NCAA team bid is based on a team's ranking in the varsity 8, second varsity, and varsity 4. Hence, the win in the varsity 4 race will certainly help the Terriers.

The most exciting race of the day was in the second varsity event in which 1.2 seconds separated Northeastern, B.U., and Radcliffe.

Northeastern, which put on a sprint in the final 500 meters and kept it up through the finish line, overtook the Terriers at the end to win in 6:57.0. The Terriers were clocked in 6:58.0, while Radcliffe was timed in 6:58.2. MIT was fourth in 7:26.0.

"It was an amazing race," said Hatton. "I have never seen three boats cross the finish line that close to each other.

"In terms of the Eastern Sprints rankings, that was a significant performance for us," the coach said. "Radcliffe was ranked fourth, Northeastern was ninth, and we were 10th going into this weekend. So, there should be some changes made.

"Our boat is looking stronger, and I am really happy for them," concluded Hatton.
