Women's Varsity Crew Shows Improvement While Losing to Strong Brown Boat
The Terriers' varsity women's crew rowed perhaps its best race of the season albeit in a losing effort as B.U. bowed to host Brown on Saturday (April 22nd). Brown boasts one of the top-rated crews in the nation but managed to beat the Terriers by just over four seconds.6:07.64 to 6:12.14. "The varsity rowed an awesome race," said Terrier head coach Holly Hatton, whose team is now 3-2 in regattas this spring. "In fact, we led at the 1250-meter mark, and that's pretty amazing by itself," continued the coach. "That's when they made their move and beat us by 4.5 seconds. The only other crew to be closer to Brown this season was Princeton. "The difference between how we rowed today and how we rowed against Yale last week is like night and day," said Hatton. Last Saturday (April 15th), B.U., which was ranked eighth in the nation at the time, looked sluggish in bowing to the ninth-ranked Elis, 6:20.6 to 6:24.4. "We rowed a much more intensive race against Brown," said Hatton. "I think the rowers are finally figuring it out. "Based on the improvement we showed, I think the varsity is back in the picture." Hatton was not quite as pleased with how the second varsity and first freshman crews performed. Both boats suffered their first losses of the spring, as each went into the Brown regatta with a 5-0 record. The second varsity lost to Brown by over 18 seconds, 6:23.0 to 6:41.2, while the freshmen lost by just over five seconds, 6:31.2 to 6:36.4 "The jayvees didn't row well," said Hatton. "They just had an off day. "I think the novice also rowed sluggishly," concluded the coach. "However, I think we are a faster crew than the final margin indicated." The lone B.U. crew to come home with a victory was the second novice, which won a tight race over Brown. The final margin was less than a second as B.U. was timed in 6:44.7, while Brown was clocked in 6:45.4.
