Women's Crews Swept By Brown
The Terrier women's heavyweight crew rowed well for the first third of the race but then fell victim to a bigger, more powerful Brown boat and lost the featured race by 10 seconds on the Charles River on Saturday (April 13th). Rowing in the best conditions of the spring season thus far, the Terriers covered the 2000-meter course in 6:38.86. In the meantime, the Brown boat, which is ranked eighth in the nation and second in the region behind only Radcliffe, rowed in 6:28.7. The two boats got off to a good start on the relatively flat waters of the Charles. And, through the first 700 to 800 meters, the Terriers stayed up with Brown. However, at about 800 meters, the Bruins pulled out and rowed smoothly for the remainder of the race. "We gave up about six seconds in the third 500," said Terrier coach Holly Hatton. "I thought we rowed well. I knew it was going to be difficult to beat them. I just wish the margin were a little closer. "We did give up some size," the coach went on. "We have two rowers in the varsity who weigh about 145 pounds, and it is tough to compete against a crew as big as Brown." Brown dominated the morning competition as the Bruins won the second varsity, first novice, and varsity four races, as well. In the second varsity, Brown was clocked in 6:34.31 to the Terriers' 6:59.49. In the first novice race, which was similar to the first varsity, the Terriers rowed a strong race for the first 600 to 700 meters before Brown pulled away with a 26-second win, 6:40.67 to 7:06.89. Finally, in the varsity four race, the Brown "A" boat rowed in 7:24.94 to B.U.'s 7:42.48.
