The Terrier women's varsity crew fought off a mix of snow, sleet, and rain as well as a late charge by George Washington to defeat GW and Navy to capture the Playfair Trophy on the Charles River on Saturday (April 5th).
Because of the mix of virtually every form of precipitation possible, the race location and distance had to be changed. Rather than begin in the customary location of the Charles River basin and row under the Mass. Ave Bridge and past the MIT boathouse to the 2,000-meter mark, the course began up River just past the B.U. Bridge and stretched 1,400 meters.
The Terrier varsity, which entered the regatta with a 1-1 record, led from the start. However, in the final 200 meters, George Washington made a push that the Terriers were able to hold off. The final margin was just about a length as the Terriers were timed in 4:50.67 to 4:53.7 for GW. Navy was third in 5:14.61.
The Playfair Trophy is named after Virginia Playfair, the late mother of Boston University assistant provost Michael Field. A graduate of the U.S Naval Academy who was a Navy pilot retired as a captain, Field donated the trophy to perpetuate the memory of his mother, who graduated from Boston University. In addition, Field's daughter, Sara, who presented the trophy to the winning Terrier crew on Saturday, rowed in the bow seat for the Terriers' 1992 national championship crew.
The Terriers also won the second varsity and varsity 4 races, while they finished second in the first novice event.
In the second varsity, the Terriers were timed in 5:05 to 5:15 for Navy and 5:26 for George Washington, while the winning time in the varsity 4 was 5:12.37 to 5:53.13 for Navy. Georgetown, which did not row in either the first or second varsity races, finished third in the varsity 4 with a time of 6:02. George Washington was not entered in the event.
Finally, George Washington won the first novice race in 4:57.29 to 5:00.22 for the Terriers. Georgetown was third in 5:13.0 followed by Navy in 5:16.
