Women's Crew Loses To Syracuse, Beats UMass In Spring Opener

The Terrier women's crew, rowing in choppy but rowable water on the Charles River opened its spring season on Saturday (March 29th) with a split decision against Syracuse and UMass. They lost to the Orange by just over three seconds but defeated UMass by over 24 seconds.

Competing over the 2000-meter course, the Syracuse first varsity boat was timed in 7:13.07, while the Terriers were clocked in 7:16.21. UMass was third in 7:40.31.

That was the same finish in the second varsity and first novice events as Syracuse won the three races, while the Terriers were second and UMass third.

In the second varsity, Syracuse won by a margin of just 2.1 seconds as the Orange rowed in 8:16.0 to 8:18.1 for the Terriers. UMass finished in 8:57.1

Finally, in the first novice, Syracuse bested the Terriers, 7:39.0 to 8:04.4, and UMass was third in 8:57.1.

The races were held in a strong cross wind. In fact, the wind was so strong that the stake boats that were used to line up the crews for the races were blown off so that all races were from a floating start. The first varsity race, which got underway at 9:24 a.m., had the best rowing conditions with choppy but rowable water. The first novice race was next with increased chop, while the second varsity race was like victory at sea.
