Chantell Alford has been named the 2010 MVP for the Boston University women's basketball team following a breakout season for the rookie guard, which culminated with her winning the 2010 America East Rookie of the Year honor.

Alford stepped right into a starting role early on in the season and went on to break the freshman scoring record (447 pts), which was previously held by Katie Terhune ('01), BU's all-time leading scorer. At season's end she not only earned the conference's Rookie of the Year honor, but she was also an America East All-Conference First Team selection - the first AE rookie since Cindy Blodgett (Maine '95) to earn a spot on the first team.

Alford, who averaged 14.9 points per game, finished the 2009-10 season ranked 144th in the nation in scoring and was 14th among rookie scorers. Her season average ties Kate Gordon (Hofstra '95) for 10th all-time among AE rookie single-season leaders. In 2009-10, she was named the AE Rookie of the Week six times - including a string of five straight weeks, which was the longest streak in four years.

Alford helped lead the Terriers into their second straight postseason appearance in 2009-10, where they hosted Providence in the Women's National Invitation Tournament at Case Gym. BU finished the season with a 16-15 overall record and 11-5 America East mark.
