Women's Basketball Posts 79-70 Victory Over Vermont
Box Score / (.pdf) BOSTON - The Boston University women's basketball team used a 16-0 run spanning the halves to overcome a sluggish start and earn a 79-70 home victory against Vermont on Wednesday evening at Case Gym. Freshman Jesyka Burks-Wiley paced four Terriers in double figures with 18 points, helping BU win for the seventh time in nine contests and improve to 16-8 on the year with a 9-4 conference mark. Vermont, which lost for the eighth time in nine games, fell to 8-16 (4-10 AE), but got a big night from Alexis Castro. The sophomore forward recorded game highs of 27 points and 14 rebounds. Despite battling foul trouble throughout the game, sophomore Kasey Devine recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Senior Rachael Vanderwal continued her torrid February with totals of 17 points and seven rebounds, while junior Erica Kovach contributed 14 points and six boards. Burks-Wiley and fellow freshman Christine Kinneary each collected seven caroms. The Terriers struggled to find their shooting touch in the early stages, but did their best to prevent the visitors from jumping out to a big lead. The Catamounts led by as many as nine in the opening frame and held a 34-28 advantage with 1:30 left before halftime. BU reeled off the next 16 points, turning a six-point deficit into a 44-34 lead with 17 minutes left in regulation. From that point on, Vermont would get no closer than six points, as the Terriers built a lead of 14 on two occasions before finishing off its third straight victory. After making only a third of their shots in the first half, the Terriers responded with a 53.1-percent showing following intermission to finish at 42.6. Vermont shot 34.2 percent on the evening. Wednesday's win capped the Terriers' second sweep over the Catamounts in the past three years after going 14 straight seasons without a sweep over their conference rival. The Terriers will look to extend their win streak to four games when they return to action on Saturday, Feb. 25, in a road contest against New Hampshire. Game time is set for 1 p.m. BU will attempt to avenge an 83-71 home loss to the Wildcats from earlier in the month.
