CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - After leading the Terriers to a 3-0 record for the week and extending their winning streak to seven-straight games, junior Chantell Alford of the Boston University women’s basketball team was named America East Player of the Week, as announced by the conference on Monday afternoon.

It is Alford’s second Player of the Week award this season as she also received the honor on Dec. 19, 2011.

The West Haven, Conn., native helped BU improve to 14-6 on the season and 7-0 in conference play with three victories in the past week. The Terriers took down Albany on the road, 58-54, on Monday, Jan. 16, before picking up a pair of home wins to remain undefeated (8-0) at Case Gym. BU defeated New Hampshire, 79-39, on Thursday, Jan. 19, before staging a come-from-behind victory against Hartford on Sunday, Jan. 22.

Alford averaged 11.7 points and 5.7 rebounds in the Terriers’ last three games while adding 3.3 assists and 1.3 steals per game. The guard also went a perfect 5-for-5 from the foul line to maintain her league-leading 90.6 free throw shooting percentage.

The reigning America East Player of the Year led all scorers with 17 points in Thursday night’s match-up with New Hampshire. Alford connected on four shots from beyond the arc and added six rebounds, six assists and a pair of steals to her efforts. On Sunday, she nearly had a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds, as BU erased a first-half deficit to take down Hartford.

Alford leads the first-place Terriers with 12.4 points per game and is shooting a team-best 36.3 percent from beyond the arc. Her 2.2 steals per game are first on the team and rank fifth in the conference.

BU returns to action with a trip to Baltimore, Md., on Wednesday, Jan. 25, to take on UMBC. Game time is set for 12 p.m. and the contest will be broadcast on ESPN3.
