QUEENS, N.Y. -Boston University concluded the non-conference portion of its schedule with a 75-38 loss to St. John's on New Year's Eve. It was the Terriers' third game in three days and BU's fourth-straight road contest.
Junior Chantell Alford led the Terriers with 12 points while sophomore Rashidat Agboola grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds. Agboola added eight points while senior Alex Young also chipped in eight points.
BU finished the game with a 28.8 field goal percentage (25-of-52) while the Red Storm converted on 54.7 percent of their shots (29-of-53). St. John's out-rebounded the Terriers, 44-27. The Red Storm also forced BU into 19 turnovers which were turned into 16 points.
St. John's opened the game with a 5-0 run that took the teams to the first timeout at 15:57. Young scored the Terriers' first six points to bring BU within one, 7-6, but St. John's followed with a 23-3 run to take a 29-9 lead with just over seven minutes remaining in the first half. Alford sunk a three-pointer for the Terriers at the 6:52 mark before BU went without a basket for almost six minutes until Agboola hit a jumper with 53 second remaining in the half. The Red Storm extended its lead, as the teams went into halftime with St. John's Leading, 41-14.
The Terriers struggled to find their offense in the first half, as BU shot 19.2 percent from the field (5-of-26). St. John's started the game hot, as the Red Storm converted 61.5 percent of their shots (16-of-26).
The Red Storm began the second half with a 6-1 run before the Terriers countered with a 4-0 run of their own with jumpers from Alford and Agboola. BU brought St. John's lead down to 30 points on two occasions; first, following a three-pointer from Stewart at the 11:35 mark and then a jumper from Whitney Turner brought the score to 55-25 just over a minute later. The Red Storm then embarked on a 20-11 run to gain their largest lead of the night, 75-36, with a 1:20 to play. Agboola scored the final points of the game for the Terriers with a layup to bring the final score to 75-38 in favor of the Red Storm.
The Terriers begin conference play on Wednesday, Jan. 4, with a trip to Vermont. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
